Het zijn schepen die voor het eerst in de geschiedenis speciaal gebouwd werden voor het bestrijden van invloedsmijnen en in Groot- Brittannië behoren zij tot de MMS - de motor minesweepers.Omdat de schepen onlosmakelijk verbonden zijn met de introductie van de magnetisch mijn en de ontwikkeling van het magnetische veegtuig, wordt ook aan die onderwerpen aandacht besteed.De schepen werden tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog aangekocht door de Nederlandse regering in ballingschap en ingezet in Britse wateren. Zij hadden een actief aandeel in de bevrijding van Nederland en zorgden dat de Nederlandse havens weer toegankelijk werden voor de scheepvaart.Eind 1945 werd de helft naar Nederlands-Indië gezonden om ook daar het mijnengevaar te neutraliseren. In de vijftiger jaren van de vorige eeuw werden zij pas uit dienst genomen.Zij hadden toen honderden mijnen geveegd en tien duizenden mijlen afgelegd in dienst van de Koninklijke Marine. Het personeel dat aan boord diende was een doorsnee van de mensen die op zee in en na de oorlog hun plicht deden. In eerste instantie bestond de bemanning uit visserlieden, na de bevrijding grotendeels uit oorlogsvrijwilligers en tenslotte uit regulier beroeps- en reserve personeel van de marine. Twee schepen zijn bij hun werk vergaan; met één schip kwam de complete bemanning (op één man na) om het leven. Naast de eenvoudige leefomstandigheden aan boord trotseerden de bemanningen bijna dagelijks het mijnengevaar.Niet voor niets staan vele acties van deze houten mijnenvegers vermeld op het vaandel van de Mijnendienst.
