Ottimo esemplare genuino di questo raffinato libro di botanica su Sicilia, Malta, Francia e Italia (ma in realtà quasi completamente dedicato alla Sicilia). Paolo Boccone (1633-1704) «raccolse e studiò le numerose e diverse specie di piante tipiche delle varie regioni, contemporaneamente osservando qualsiasi evento naturale che si presentasse alla propria attenzione con spirito, se non sempre critico, certo chiarificatore e analizzatore. Delle piante raccolte dette per primo una classificazione, obbedendo in ciò a quella che era ormai sentita come urgente necessità dai naturalisti del Seicento, posti di fronte ad una quantità sempre crescente di specie naturali, che le nuove esplorazioni ed il più vivo spirito di osservazione avevano portato alla conoscenza umana. Per queste ragioni il B. fu considerato uno degli iniziatori degli studi sistematici sulla flora europea, e come tale acquistò solida fama presso i contemporanei e gli studiosi del secolo successivo». Boccone compì i suoi studi a Padova, Perugia e Pisa. Viaggiò moltissimo per poi stabilirsi a Padova dove divenne professore di botanica. Fu botanico di corte del Granduca di Toscana Ferdinando II contribuendo allo sviluppo del Giardino dei Semplici di Firenze. Coniò diverse specie ed ebbe grandi meriti nella diffusione della patata come pianta alimentare. Questa sua celebre opera raccoglie i risultati di numerose indagini e ricerche sui più variegati fenomeni naturali, geologici, medici e terapeutici. All'interno sono presenti due tavole fuori testo.
