Behring, E.v.: Ueber den Begriff der "Reinheit" beim Diphtherieheilserum nebst einer Zurückweisung von mehreren Einwendungen gegen die Serumtherapie. 'The Determination of the Value of the Diphtheria-Healing Serum' - "Having secured funds from the chemical firm Hoechst, Behring was able to resume diphtheria research in 1893 on a larger scale. This study, written jointly by Behring and Oskar Boer (1847-1897), with whom he had long collaborated on experimental procedures for immunizing animals with chemical agents, originally appeared as the last of a three-part series published in Deutsche medizinische Wochenschrift in April and May 1893. It was then reprinted in Behring's Gesammelte Abhandlungen (Part 2), pp. 333-344, later that year. The authors not only explain how diphtheria serum was produced from an immunized sheep, but also provide considerable insight into problems of standardizing sera. They report on a series of experiments to determine the value of sheep sera for immunizing and curing guinea pigs against both bacterial infections and diphtheria intoxications. Therefore, this article offers the reader a very good sense of the enormous amount of research that had to be carried out and the formidable technical difficulties that had to be overcome to transform Behring and Kitasato's observations at the end of 1890 into a fully viable remedy for humans against diphtheria in 1894. It once again also demonstrates that Behring and his associates made major contributions to solving problems of drug standardization." Derek S. Linton, Emil von Berhing (2005), pp.503-509.
