Plus 39 (only 38 are called for) finely printed collotype plates with a total of 62 (only 61 are called for) images. Original portfolio of cloth and printed boards, gilt spine, cloth ties, one loose; bit shabby, wear to extremities, some soiling. In… good condition, plates in fine condition. ~ FIRST EDITION. This is the original Dutch edition of what was published later in German as "Beschreibung der Aegyptischen Sammlung des Niederländischen Reichsmuseums der Altertümer in Leiden." Only 38 plates are called for, however this copy comprises of 40 plates, including the additionl XXIVa. Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. Suitable only for very short printing runs, each plate would print no more than a few hundred impressions, and existing prints, when can be found in good condition, are worth pursuing, both for the scholar and collector. ~ [Provenance:] From the library of renowned Egyptologist Prof. Dr. Heerma van Voss (1923-2015) with his charming bookplate inside cover and with his neat pencil annotation in the text section.
