This is a splendidly-printed two-volume descriptive catalogue of the Liturgical Section in the library of the Bourbon dukes of…Parma, located at Schwarzau-am-Steinfeld in Austria (subsequently sold in Paris, 30 May -1 June 1932). It comprehensively describes over 600 liturgical works printed in the 15th and 16th centuries The collection was formed by two great bibliophiles, Charles Louis of Bourbon, Duke of Parma and his grandson duke Robert: Charles Louis particular enthusiasm was for Books of Hours while Robert assiduously added Missals, Breviaries, and other liturgical books. The collection contains many works of which the copies described are the only ones known and a great number of other rarities. The catalogue is notable for the bibliographical accuracy with which Dr Bohatta describes the individual editions and for his additional notes and the comprehensive indexes that conclude the work. In the catalogue entries Bohatta typically reproduces the beginnings and ends of all important divisions (especially in what relate to the three principal feasts of the year), discusses the character of the respective editions and of course, of the individual volume; he then indicates other locations where the book is to be found, the literary works containing references to it ( upwards of 144 such works are quoted), and the antiquarian price at auction sale. The indexes comprise first an alphabetical index (Agenda-Vigiliae), followed by an alphabetical index of places of printing, printers, and publishers, another in chronological order of publication dates (1474-1670), and finally the tables of the large illustrations of the Books of Hours. The small edition of 200 copies appears to have been chiefly distributed to friends and scholars rather than offered for sale. Copy No. 8 (Vol I) and copy no. 45 (Vol 2). Wrappers browned, chipped and torn, front wrapper of Vol I split along hinge, front wrapper of Vol 2 stained, untrimmed fore-edges somewhat browned and slightly duststained, contents Very Good.
