Bei den Essays des vorliegenden Bandes geht es darum, die dichterischen Niederschläge der philosophischen Gegenwartsbewegungen, der Lebens- und der Existenzphilosophie, sichtbar zu machen. Im ersten Teil "Zwischen Leben und Existenz" wird an Beispielen aus den Dichtungen von Hofmannsthal, Hesse, Weinheber, Friedrich Georg Jünger und Bergengruen dargetan, wie der Weg des Lebens von überschäumendem Enthusiasmus durch die immer bedrängenderen Erfahrungen einer unheimlich gewordenen Welt hindurchführt zu einem festen Gefühl neuer Geborgenheit. Damit will Bollnow helfen die im Existentialismus sich zeigende Krise des modernen Bewußtseins zu überwinden. Daß er dazu dichterische Beispiele statt streng philosophischer Untersuchungen wählt, hat seinen guten, sachlichen Grund : wo der Philosoph, durch methodische Schwierigkeiten behindert, nur schwerfällig vorwärts kommt, kann der Dichter, unbeschwert und unbefangen, einen viel größeren Umkreis neuer Lebenserfahrungen aussprechen und vielleicht sogar der langsamer nachfolgenden Philosophie den Weg ebnen. Der zweite Teil "Der Weg ins Innere" greift zurück auf die Romantik und zeigt an aufschlußreichen Stücken aus Novalis, Eichendorff und E. T. A. Hoffmann, wie scheinbar bloß subjektive Gefühle und Stimmungen zu tiefen Erkenntnissen von der Fragwürdigkeit menschlicher Existenz und zum Bewußtsein eines verborgenen Weltgrundes führen können.
