Il prospéra notamment dans le Piémont à la fin du XVIe et au début du XVIIe siècle avec l'appui des duc de Savoie, et redonna une nouvelle jeunesse aux vieux monastères bénédictins de la région. La carrière de Giovanni Bona en témoigne. Il entre à l'abbaye Sainte-Marie de Pignerol, étudie à Turin, devint prieur à Montegrosso d'Asti, puis abbé de Vicoforte, près de Mondovi, et enfin général de l'ordre en 1651 à Rome. Il est créé cardinal en 1669.
