Andrew Bonar Law (1858-1923) was a British statesman and Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from October 1922 to May 1923. He was also Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow, and thi…s booklet contains an Address delivered to students in Saint Andrew's Hall, Glasgow, on March 11th 1921. The book is sewn-bound in the original grey-blue thin card covers with black titling on the front cover. The booklet is in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling on the covers. There is slight curling to the corners of the covers and a split of about 1 1/2" at the top of the spine and a split of about 1/2" at the bottom of the spine. The contents are secure and clean with some light foxing on the first few pages and a name and address written on the title-page.

First proposed in 1903, by Joseph Chamberlain, it was designed to change the UK's system of free trade to one of protectionism and Imperial preference. The proposed reforms were hotly debated and fiercely oppos…ed by the Liberal government of the day, with the then Prime Minister, H. H. Asquith, a staunch advocate of free trade. The author, a prominent supporter of Tariff Reform, here presents arguments he made at various speeches proposing a system of Imperial preference whereby tariffs would be reduced on goods imported from the colonies in exchange for similar reductions from the colonies on goods imported from the UK. This would, the author argues, help to secure a hold on markets in the colonies that were vital to British manufacturing, and assist in countering the growing competition from other industrial nations with protectionist systems, such as Germany and the United States. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
