A good number of manuscript volumes still exist, but this history begins with the advent of printing. It tells their story, from the Officium Beatae Virginis Maria…e printed by Mathias Moravius in Naples in A.D. 1486 to the present time when new printing methods, and perhaps a growing belief that small is beautiful, have greatly increased the number of enthusiastic collectors. It deals chronologically and in detail with their development, with changes in taste and fashion and with technical advances: it has sections on special subjects including devotional books, costume, erotica, gastronomy, song books and topography; it describes some of the more curious items and publishers' bindings; it reviews current production, assesses prospects for the future and mentions some of the principal collections and collectors.
