Trade Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Reynolds, Laura - Cover and Book Design (illustratore). First Edition. 314 Pages. No marks of any sort. Death in a Red Desert, a ground breaking case in animal DNA forensic investigation, was featured on the television network Animal Planet. The manuscript chronicles the unusual triangle between a woman, her lover and his transvestite partner, and the events leading up to the disappearance and murder of Elizabeth Langhorst-Ballard. The authors based the work on depositions, trial transcripts and tapes, and on interviews with the detectives, officials in the district attorney's office, the victim's parents and with Charles Martinez, one of the two convicted murderers. Some of the information, using as a guide court documentation and letters written by the other defendant Chris Faviell, is related in a conversational manner to enhance the flow of the story. Names of a few minor figures were changed. Many of the events and the trials are viewed through the eyes of the lead detective, Wolfgang Born, who was an invaluable resource in writing the account, as was the lead prosecutor Canon Stevens. After Born's dogged search for the victim's body in thousands of square miles of red desert in the Tularosa Basin of Otero County, New Mexico, yielded success, the persistence of the late Jim Biggs, a Ruidoso detective, led to Dr. Joy Halverson, whose DNA work on the case made history and was highlighted on the Animal Witness series in 2008. Canines played key roles in solving the crime from the pit bull pet of one of the killers to desert coyotes and a cadaver dog on his last assignment before retirement.

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. Leon, Bonni (book design); Zahedi, Firooz (author photograph) (illustratore). 1st Edition. As new condition green boards, black cloth spine and pink spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Preliminary Page Quotes by Anne Sexton and Acknowledgments. "Now that she's conquered rehab and romance, best-selling novelist Carrie Fisher boldly goes where no man has gone before: motherhood. Hollywood screenwriter Cora Sharpe has taken to writing letters to the unborn child she's tentatively dubbed Esme - even though it sounds like a noise your nose makes. But then, Cora has what one of the endless intimates she thinks of as her Committee calls "a big loud life," and recent events have been no exception. Her confidant and writing partner, Bud, has been on a bipolar roller coaster. Her dear friend William, AIDS-ridden, has fiinally taken leave of his life, with the aplomb befitting "a suburban show business sultan." And in the vacuum that follows his departure, Cora's romance with quiet, gentle Ray has suddenly flickered and expired. Then Cora finds out she's pregnant, and even the Committee can't steer her through this one. In a fight-or-flight confrontation with maturity, flight seems to have the upper hand. So when her mother, Viv, tries to rally support for her latest madcap scheme - to kidnap her Alzheimer's-stricken father from a nursing home and take him back to Whitewright, Texas, the place of his birth - Cora, for once, is game. With Bud in tow, she signs on for what turns out to be a cosmic (not to mention comic) exploration of the urges that drive us to feather our nests and fill them, to flee them and find our way home. With singular deftness, Fisher captures the ambivalence and absurdity of modern maternity, in her wittiest and wisest novel to date." - from the inner front jacket flap. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "Carrie Fisher has been a dictator in her teens, an actor in her twenties (The Star Wars trilogy, Hannah and Her Sisters, etc), a screenwriter and novelist in her thirties (Postcards from the Edge, Surrender the Pink). She anxiously anticipates whatever ghoulish incarnations await her. In the meantime, she and her daughter, Billie, divide their time between Beverly Hills and Florence, Italy" - from the inner rear jacket flap.

"Imagine the offspring of Marcel Proust and the Energizer Bunny - that's who Richard Avedon was, a crhonicler of fashion, an analyst of social types, the author in pictures of his era. And Philip Gefter captures him." - Louis Menand, Pulitzer Prize-winning author. "Mesmerizing . Like Avedon's blank white backgrounds, blasted with light, Gefter's pages expose in a controlled and intelligent manner all the bigness and littleness of one of the greats." - Brad Gooch, New York Times bestselling author. "A compelling, beautifully written examination of Avedon's life as it reflects the larger cultural milieu of post-World War II New York, and, more importantly, an argument for the role of the artist in contemporary society. " - Stephen Shore, photographer. "The first definitive biography of Richard Avedon, a monumental photographer of the twentieth century, from award-winning photography critic Philip Gefter. In his acclaimed portraits, Richard Avedon captured the icononic figures of the twentieth century in his starkly bold, intimately minimal, and forensic visual style. Concurrently, his work for Harper's Bazaar and Vogue transformed the ideals of women's fashion, femininity, aand culture to become the defining look of an era. Yet despite his driving ambition to gain respect in the art world, during his lifetime he was condescendingly dismissed as a "celebrity photographer." What Becomes a Legend Most is the first definitive biography of this luminary - an intensely driven man who endured personal and professional prejudice, struggled with deep insecurities, and mounted an existential lifelong battle to be recognized as an artist. Philip Gefter builds on archival research and exclusive interviews with those closest to Avedon to chronicle his story, beginning with Avedon's coming-of-age in New York between the world wars, when cultural prejudices forced him to make decisions that shaped the course of his life. Compounding his prvate battles, Avedon fought to be taken seriously in a medium that itself struggled to be respected within the art world. Gefter reveals how the 1950s and 1960s informed Avedon's life and work as much as he informed the period. He counted as close friends a profoundly influential group of artists - Leonard Bernstein, Truman Capote, James Baldwin, Harold Brodkey, Renata Adler, Sidney Lumet, and Mike Nichols - who shaped the cultural life of the American twentieth century. It wasn't until Avedon's fashion work was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the late 1970s that he became a household name. Balancing glamour with the gravitas of an artist's genuine reach for worldly achievement - and not a little gossip - plus sixteen pages of photographs, What Becomes a Legend Most is an intimate window into Avedon's fascinating world. Dramatic, visionary, and remarkable, it pays tribute to Avedon's role in the history of photography and fashion - and his legacy as one of the most consequential artists of his time." -- from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

Such was his powerful effect on all those who had heard his music. For a century, the lock of hair was a treasured Hiller family relic, and perhaps was destined to end up sequestered in a bank vault, until it somehow found its way to the town of Gilleleje, in Nazi-occupied Denmark, during the darkest days of the Second World War." ; FINE/FINE. " "Dearest Child, That I did not know you, my loss is greatest. Forgive me for the pain I have brought to those who love you. So gladly would I trade my sad life for your realm. Angel, watch over this little one." On a wintry October night a mysterious letter was left at the base of the angel monument which overlooks the grave of Andrea Parkin, the only child of David and MaryAnne Parkin. In The Letter, the unforgettable conclusion to the Christmas Box collection, Richard writes, "I discovered the letter in the winter of 1949 pressed between the pages of a diary that belonged to the child's father, and at first glance, I regarded it as of little consequence. It was only after I had read the diary that I learned of the letter's great significance and the events it set in motion." It is within the final pages of this beautiful novel that David and MaryAnne Parkin face love's greatest challenge. And in finding love's truest meaning, they learn the lessons that are echoed throughout the Christmas Box story." - from the rear outer jacket. "The Letter, the final book of the Christmas Box collection, is, most simply stated, the love story of David and MaryAnne Parkin. But it is also everyone's love story, for it is about the storms that all relationships must face when the blissful state of romance vanishes into one of real-life challenges and difficulties. We often forget that it is in the hard times that we truly see what is best in love as well as in life. Though love may be temporarily darkened, true love never gives in, or up. but holds tight to noble ideas, which transcend this earth and all time. The Letter is also about our pasts and our individual quests to discover who we are. In The Letter, David Parkin sets out on a journey to find his mother, a woman who abandoned him when he was a child. In truth, however, David is searching for himself as he seeks to free himself from the pain of her rejection and his fear that he was somehow unworthy of her love. In a sense, David's search is the same journey we are all pursuing. We are all seeking love. My hope is that you will feel what I felt as I wrote this book -- the divine nature of loyalty and the understanding of why we must share love whenever and wherever we can. One final note. I am saddened to finish the Christmas Box trilogy and to bid good-bye to the Parkin family. I do not know if I shall ever visit them again, but I am glad for this last story -- a story which I think is a fitting send-off for the characters I've grown to love. I hope that the message you find in their lives is meaningful to your own. And, most of all, that in reading the Christmas Box collection, you, and those with whom you share my books, will never be the same. With my love, Richard Paul Evans." - from the inner front jacket flap. Signed by Author(s).

"This is the love story of Michael Keddington and Faye Murrow, a love story that takes place not in seclusion but in the real world, with the challenges that all lovers must face. No relationship is an island: There are threads that bind us all and pull at our lives - the demands of family, of friends, of work, and social obligation. And there are times that the pull of those threads becomes greater than the strength of the relationship. In these times, no matter how much two people love each other, a relationship must grow strong or be torn apart. The Carousel is about whaqt happens when life doesn't turn out the way that we planned. Beyond a love story, it is about faith, loyalty, and sacrifice. My hope is that you, and those with whom you share this book, might find the message of this story meaningful and applicable to your own life. And that in some way you might feel changed.
