"The Young Crusader" provided such an outlet, with stories, poems, and articles on various subjects, including natural history. There is one temperance song - but the over all the tone of the magazine is light . it is not preachy, and obviously was something to which children could relate. The stories are cute and engaging, and the illustrations capture the eye. The black and white photograph of a little girl looking out from amidst flowers in a garden is poignantly charming.
