BELFORDS, CLARKE & CO. illustrated hardcover, sewn-bound in brick-red cloth, with black and gilt stamped decoration and lettering, is in G condition, having corners quite bumped and worn; wear to top and bottom spine, with spine lettering and decoration somewhat dulled… with age; staining to front and back covers (see photos), along with rubbing/scuffing to surface; pages from first free endpaper to frontispiece are loose but all present; significant chipping to first free endpaper, and small tear at top; some small staining towards bottom of this loose section, which carries through to contents page; some evidence of prior water contact on top left of back cover, but not too bad; small, tasteful binding company sticker ("Bound by Donohue & Henneberry, Chicago") at bottom left of last fixed endpaper; all page edges have gilt treatment; due to its antiquarian age, book is very fragile. Book is illustrated with many engravings, drawn by W. H. J. Boot and C. O. Murray, and arranged and engraved by James D. Cooper, illustrating many English country scenes. No date but an early edition, c. 1895. 40 colour plates by W H J Boot, all in place and in excellent condition with tissue guards which are in very good condition. A few of the guards have minor yellowing in places. The plates are bright, clean and unmarked. They have the name of each pla…te in French as well as English. There are black and white etchings of features of the trees are at the head and end of each chapter. Unmarked throughout and no inscriptions but for name on ffep. 160 pages + 16 pages of ads, four of which are uncut at side edge. Pale yellowing of front and rear endpapers. Tight binding. The green cloth cover, with bright gilt lettering, has a little wear at top & base of spine and at corners. Boot, W. H. J. (illustratore).
