When found in Brazil, its culture and its utilization, as a nutritious element, were already developed. The original 'habitat' of this plant seems to have taken place in the lower Amazon Region from where manioc culture outstretched throughout a large insular and continental surface of America, and, since Columbus arrival, all over the inter-tropical world. As a basic foodstuff, either bitter manioc, prepared as flour, or sweet manioc, used as a vegetable, play an outstanding role in the Brazilian agriculture.
