Así describía un anónimo soldado español las aguas del golfo de Lepanto en el mediodía del 7 de octubre de 1571, cuando la armada otomana chocó con la flota reunida por la Liga Santa ?la Monarquía Hispánica, el Papado y Venecia?, en una de las mayores batallas navales de toda la Historia: «la más alta ocasión que vieron los siglos», tal y como la apellidó otro soldado. En la balanza, el dominio sobre el Mediterráneo, fieramente ambicionado por una Sublime Puerta que deseaba resarcirse del revés de Malta, que acababa de arrebatar Chipre a Venecia y que no cejaba en su acoso sobre las costas italianas y españolas con el corso berberisco. Un dominio contestado sin tregua por la Monarquía Hispánica, en un enfrentamiento que, amén de geoestratégico, era confesional, entre islam y cristiandad, y entre los respectivos paladines de la fe verdadera, el islam suní de Selim II y el catolicismo de Felipe II. Restoration of the Piyale Pasa Mosque in Istanbul. "Piyale Pasha Moque and its Social Complex were construction cluster constructed by Arc…hitect Sinan upon the request of Kaptan-i Derya Piyale Pasa in 1573. It was constructed as a social complex consisting of mosque, education center, lodge, mausoleum, special part, ottoman elementary-primary school, market and Ottoman bath; however, only the mosque and mausoleum reached to today. The mosque in the 30,5x19,5 sizes and with rectangular plan is located on two big granite columns and arches and covered with six domes each of which has a diameter for 9 meters. Even if it is considered within Pre-Ottoman Grand Mosque in Anatolia with its six domes, Piyale Pasha Mosque is thought to be an example which was developed and made thinner through the new method of Sinan. One of the very rare tile mihrabs of classical period takes place in the marble minbar mosque. The sole minaret of the mosque which does not comply with the architectural traditions of the period with its domes, arches, entrance portico takes place right on the entrance and it has a single balcony. The mosque was ruined because of the surrounding dense structuring activities, omissions, and natural disasters such as fires and earthquakes in time. All cement-based joints and plasters were rasped and therefore, original hand-drawn works were found out and protected within the scope of the restoration works. Upon the removal of the screed layers on the top cover, the original dome figures were revealed. The work was reached to its original identity and unlicensed constructions in the parcel were demolished and environmental planning was realized at the end of the restoration.".

29 articles relating to the Barbary Regencies comprised of Algeria, Tunis(ia), and Tripoli-Libya (Tripolitania), which constituted a weighty segment of Ottoman history in the Western Mediterranean during the 16th-20th centuries, have been collected in this publication of IRCICA. The articles are in Turkish (20), English (6), Fre…nch (2), and Arabic (1), grouped under the following headings: Sources and Historical Debates; Military Power, Navy and Piracy; Diplomacy, Europeans; Administration, Economy, and Socio-Cultural Structure. Thanks to advances of research on the history of the Western Regencies, it has become possible to re-evaluate the Ottoman Empire's relations with its most distant regencies in the Mediterranean, to deepen information and understandings about processes such as Mediterranean political and commercial history, the Ottomans' role as mediator in problem cases in the region, the relationship between central and provincial administrations, diplomatic and commercial relations with European states, maritime affairs and piracy, military power, and the local administrative structures. Relevant official archive documents are being deciphered and used as references. This book has the Foreword of IRCICA Director General Prof. Dr. Mahmud Erol Kilic and the Preface of Prof. Dr. Idris Bostan from Pirî Reis University (Istanbul). It is expected to contribute significantly to the related research fields. 631 pages.
