Pas de couverture. Condizione: Bon. Jacques-François Boullay (XVIIIe-XIXe), avocat, membre de la « Commission de l'Organisation et du Mouvement des Armées de Terre », bureau de la Police Militaire. L.S., Paris, 24 prairial an 2 [12 juin 1794], 1p in-4. Très intéressante lettre au citoyen Danet, caporal des grenadier, alors détenu à la maison d'arrêt de Versailles. Boullay ne peut intervenir pour sa libération : « tu es prévenu de propos inciviques, c'est au tribunal révolutionnaire qu'il appartient de prononcer ». Cette lettre est sympathique car Danet est le fameux citoyen dont l'histoire fut compté dans tous les journaux en janvier 1792 : il avait reçu une lettre de « traites » partis en Espagne qui l'invitaient à trahir lui-aussi. Il avait répondu assez sèchement, terminant sa lettre par « Tu peux, traître, montrer cette lettre à toute ta bande de vagabonds. Je suis avec indignation ton plus grand ennemi ». Notre document, deux ans plus tard, montre donc encore une fois que la phrase « Mon Dieu, garde-moi de mes amis, mes ennemis je m'en charge » est plus que vraie. Nous n'avons malheureusement pas trouvé les raisons précises de son arrestations, mais vu la date, il s'agit probablement d'une conséquence de la Grande Terreur instaurée par la loi du 22 prairial, deux jours avant. L'adresse, au dos, porte la mention « inconnu ». Est-il déjà mort ? A-t-il été tué ? Nous ne trouvons aucune trace de lui. [106-2]. …

La première édition semble avoir été publiée sans date, si l'on en croit Musset-Pathay, mais, le privilège portant la date de mai 1712, on est porté à croire que la même année vit les deux premiers tirages. Une troisième édition, plus développée, parut en 1723. L'auteur, Jacques Boullay de Saint-Pierre-Ampon, mort en 1736, était un chanoine d'Orléans sur lequel on n'est presque pas renseigné. Le contexte de la publication est très particulier : à cette époque, la qualité du vin orléanais continuait de décliner, les classes bourgeoises, propriétaires des vignobles, n'accordant qu'une confiance limitée aux pratiques agricoles des vignerons qui exploitent leurs vignes. Jacques Boullay s'improvisa donc professeur et médiateur, en dénonçant les "friponneries des mauvais vignerons".
