During the war, SOE?s French circuits were occupied with sabotage, resistance, wireless traffic, arms drops, couriers, clandestine meetings, blown bridges, false papers, betrayal, escape lines and the general attempt to make Nazi-occupied France as inconvenient as possible. Later, someone had to turn all that into an account with headings, because civilisation insists. This is the SOE of networks and circuits: agents dropped in by night, local resistance contacts, radio operators hunched over sets, organisers building cells, couriers carrying messages, aircraft searching for fields in the dark, containers coming down by parachute, trains disrupted, factories damaged, Gestapo pressure mounting, and the constant knowledge that one arrest could spread through a network like ink through blotting paper. Secret war sounds romantic until one remembers the paperwork is fake, the names are fake, the danger is real, and the enemy has rooms specially arranged for asking questions. The title?s ?official account? gives the whole thing a pleasingly dry irony. The British state, having encouraged people to carry explosives in occupied territory, later returned to its natural habitat: documentation. It is probably just as well.
