Très riche étude historique et ethnologique de Bernard Bourotte (Méry de son nom de plume) sur les populations montagnardes du Sud-Vietnam. Bernard Bourotte (1896-1968) a mené une carrière remarquable de professeur, d'écrivain et d'historien sur plus de quarante ans en Indochine. Il est resté comme l'une des grandes figures de l'élite intellectuelle française expatriée de la Belle Époque coloniale à la décolonisation. Parallèlement à ses écrits de fiction, Bourotte mène des recherches documentaires et ethnographiques de terrain. Passionné par l'histoire de l'Asie du Sud-Est, il collabore activement avec la Société des Études Indochinoises (BSEI). Son ouvrage majeur, « Essai d'histoire des Populations Montagnardes du sud-indochinois jusqu'à 1945 » (publié en 1955), est devenu un document d'archive inestimable pour comprendre les dynamiques des minorités ethniques (les "Moïs") des hauts plateaux. On lui doit également une étude historique importante sur l'explorateur français Auguste Pavie.
