Formed under Philip the Bold and passed down to his successors, John the Fearless and Philip the Good, the Library of the Dukes of Burgundy comprised no less than nine hundred manuscripts copied and illuminated by the greatest artists of the Middle Ages by the time of Charles the Bold. In 2009, for the first time in their history, the Royal Library of Belgium and the National Library of France brought together their collections to offer the broadest public a panorama of Flemish miniatures in an international exhibition. The first part was held in Brussels, the second in Paris. The richness of their respective collections and the mutual exchange of pieces allowed for the presentation of different, yet all exceptional, manuscripts in both capitals. A joint scientific catalog and a shared virtual exhibition accompanied the event. The entire project was based on research conducted over several years in both institutions on the occasion of the publication of catalogues raisonnés. More than 140 of the most prestigious illuminated manuscripts--some of which had not been shown for more than 50 years--were presented to the public in an original setting that highlighted these exceptional pieces while respecting the context in which they were created.
