ORIGINAL publisher cloth. Green leather folio. Gilt border, two motifs and attractive gilt lettering on front board. Raised bands, gilt lettering and…motifs on backstrip. Boards detached. Backstrip semi detached, chipped with a quarter from top missing. Bumped corners and exterior wear. Title pages detached. Page 59 to end attached to back board only. A few pages have small pencil markings. A few pages thumbed. Illustrated and contains multiple plates, many coloured. Gilt edges. Full morocco with gilt ruling/titles. Five raised bands. Covers show rubbing, minor marking and minor bumping. All edges gilt. Gilt page-b…locks show darkening to top edges and a few scuffs. Marbled end-papers. Bookplate to each front inner "Sans Changer"- King's (Liverpool) Regiment? Volume I: Half-title, title, dedication, 4pp preface, i-lxxi, pp61. Plates A-M except plate J, which was never published so 12 plates. In-text colour illustration. Heavy foxing to end papers. Scattered fox patches, heavier in places. Toning to a few gutters. Binding solid and secure. Volume II: Essentially the plates volume. Half-title, title, 7pp list of examples, 51 plates, many in colour with accompanying text page (or 2), 4pp marks and monograms text, 4 plates of marks. Foxing to end papers then scattered patches in places. Darkening to gutters. Binding and boards solid. The quality of the colour plates is exceptional. The preface in volume I is dated 1877 due to the work required to publish these seminal volumes. A complete first edition set in good to very good condition. More images on request.
