This is considered the cheaper edition published for the war-time rationing and sacrifice. Near fine volume in good wrapper. Antiquarian inscription in fountain pen at front blank endpaper: "To Haynie Grange, Fraternally yours, ---- Hill." Haynie Grange #169 has a hall inland from the Pacific coast in Blaine, Washington and adjacent the border with Canada. Accompanying inscription, and signed by same Grange leader (unable to decipher signature), is a typed letter with Thomas Jefferson bust as letterhead, expressing the importance of this volume and its relevance to "The Grange." The organization is officially titled: The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry - an agricultural, farming and social group founded in 1867 with chapters across America. It also has some early ties to the secrecy and ritual of Freemasonry, innocuous or not. The Grange encourages farming families to band together to promote the well-being of the community and agriculture. Founded after the Civil War in 1867, it is the oldest American agricultural advocate with national scope. The Grange actively lobbied state legislatures and Congress for political goals, such as the Granger Laws to lower rates charged by railroads, and rural mail delivery by the Post Office. Contents: "Foreword by Edward Boyking; Text (Quotations, Essays); Bible, Appendix: 1. Chronological History of Thomas Jefferson; 2. Bibliography; 3. Index." From prelude: "His were Conquests - the Conquests of truth over error, of reason over prejudice, of wisdom over violence. Victories of the mind! Triumphs of patriotism and philanthropy!" From flap summary: "This is a collection of the finest writings by Thomas Jefferson, a very quotable man. Edward Boykin has done eight years of research through the papers, books, letters and notes of the great American to produce a book which is a treasure of Jeffersonisms. In the course of a long career, Jefferson kept up a prodigious correspondence and wrote on one subject after another, in each of whcih he seemed to be fully versed. And well it may have been, since Jefferson was an inventor, architect, scholar, scientist, statesman, politician, diplomat, farmer, musician, author, mathematician, lawyer, philosopher and, most of all, a man who never lost sight of the fact no country is greater than its people! He never lost touch with common man, a fact which this book eloquently reveals. Arranged under helpful headings, the quotations from Jefferson, from three lines to several thousand words, are cross-indexed for reference. Included also is the complete text of his celebrated 'Bible,' The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth." Printed in the United States of America. 301 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.
