Printed in London for Paul Vaillant in the Strand in 1751, with the date given on the title pages in Roman numerals as MDCCLI. Pliny the Younger's letters provide an important first-hand account of Roman political, literary and domestic life during the late first and early second centuries. This edition includes Orrery's observations on the individual letters together with his extended biographical essay on Pliny. Bound in contemporary full leather with raised bands, gilt tooling and gilt decoration to the spines. An attractive eighteenth-century set retaining a pleasing period appearance. Condition: Good condition for its age. The leather bindings show general rubbing and wear, particularly around the spines, joints, board edges and corners. There are several knocks and areas of surface wear to the boards. Volume II has some loss to the spine title label, leaving part of the lettering indistinct. The pages show age-related toning, occasional spotting and areas of discolouration. There are handwritten notes and annotations to the interior. The set remains complete in two volumes and presents well as an original eighteenth-century leather-bound work. A desirable complete set of this important edition of Pliny's correspondence, suitable for collectors of classical literature, eighteenth-century books and early English translations of Roman authors.…

J., dessen Briefe er 1751 herausgab. Ebenso bemerkenswert sind seine Bemerkungen über Swifts Leben aus dem Jahre 1752. Seine Italienreise begann er im September 1754 und kehrte 1755 nach England zurück.
