Thrice-stapled textured tan card covers with title in black, housed within repeating border, prominently bearing the crest of the Oblates to the centre. Black-and-white frontispiece image of Jesus, accompanied with one additional full-page plate of a young girl with hands clasped in prayer. Chiefly comprising of musical score(s) for hymns rendered into the Saulteaux language compiled by Rev. Father Brachet and partly derived from an earlier selection of works by Rev. Conrad Latour, Rev. Bouthier, and Rev. François Blanchin. Text chiefly in romanized Saulteaux, excepting the foreword which has been printed in English and title headings which appear in English, French, and Latin. An exceptional copy showing but trifle wear to the extremities, small and unobtrusive circular institutional accession stamp to the lower-right margin of the title leaf. Textblock otherwise shows no detectable flaws with contents remaining bright, clean, and unmarked with tight, sound binding. Near fine edition of a scarce, and important Indigenous religious title. Provenance: Archives Deschsatelets (Ottawa, Canada). References: Peel 6478. Corresponds to OCLC #937514004 indicating only but two institutional holdings at time of cataloguing. Not found in BAC/LAC, University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections, FNUL, McMaster, et al. Rare indeed. "This Saulteaux Hymnal is the fruit of a long and laborious enterprise, the work of Reverend Father Joseph Brachet, O.M.I., a distinguished Missionary amongst the Saulteaux Indians of Manitoba, with much appreciated collaboration of Mr. Alexandre De Laronde, of Saint-Laurent, Manitoba.".
