Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Text printed in black ink. Formerly bound together with other tracts. No date, circa 1863. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2." Sixteen pages, complete. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning and splitting and slight chipping along spine. A Very Good copy. This pamphlet is No. 3 in a series of pro-Union articles issued by the Loyal Publication Society of New York. The Society was founded in early 1863 to help boost morale for the Union cause through the circulation of pro-Union pamphlets after the Union had suffered a series of defeats in the American Civil War. This pamphlet contains an account of a "great mass meeting" that was held on March 6, 1863 at the Cooper Institute to rally the Union war effort during the American Civil War. The account relays a brief description of the setting such as the attendance of numerous people from all walks of life. The pamphlet recounts the statements made by some of the speakers including Prosper M. Wetmore who expressed support for the Union and introduced fellow servicemembers. One of them is a young drummer boy who Wetmore commends for his gallantry despite being told he was too small to help and for shooting a Confederate soldier. The chief speakers of the event are James T. Brady (1815-1869), Judge Daly, and John Van Buren (unclear if Martin Van Buren's son). Names of officers in attendance are listed. Then, the printed speech of Brady, a defense lawyer, is presented. Brady gives a speech in support of the Union and United States Constitution. He addresses the camaraderie he feels toward Southerners but denounces the Confederacy. Brady also criticizes France and Britain for interfering with the ongoing War. He then discusses his views of the means by which the War will end. He emphatically states that two armed countries cannot occupy the same continent. He refers to the Federalist Papers regarding this matter. He says war is the only option. He also expresses support for the arming African Americans to fight for the Union. Brady says the U.S. cannot "go back" and lose the democratic government and society it has built. The next speaker is David Dudley Field. Field says the priority at hand is to end the War through force of arms alone. He says that questions about the causes of the War and who is responsible for it can wait. Field argues that war is a calamity but is a better alternative to servitude and dishonor. He contends that war is a necessity under certain circumstances. In response to the sentiment that the North is waging war against its Southern brethren, Field counters that the North is prosecuting war to protect federal laws and to uphold the U.S. Constitution. Field reassures that the Union has enough servicemembers and finances to see the war through to the end and pay off resulting debts. Former Judge Bonney then announces a series of pro-Union resolutions which are passed at the meeting. Next, Judge Daly speaks. He questions the wisdom and patriotism of anti-war Unionists. Daly believes that war is the only way to preserve the Union. John Van Buren then gives his speech. Van Buren affirms his support for the pro-Union resolutions that were just passed. He discusses a bill that would give President Abraham Lincoln more control over finances and the military and the ability to suspend habeas corpus as a means to prosecute the war. Van Buren is adamantly against this idea in general but explains his logic as to why he supports it. He appears to state that conferring these powers to the president is a necessity in order to preserve the Union. He also refers to when the then-president in 1839 was given these wartime powers in response to Britain threatening Maine. He denounces the Confederacy for insulting and not comprising with the Union which he says showed more than enough fairness.…
