Their destination was the most northern latitude americans had ever explored, with the expedition's goal to establish a meteorological observation post. Out of the twenty-five men who embarked, only six survived; this book is Brainard's diary which relates the harrowing story. Note that while this book does not match the description in Zempel for a first printing, apparently no copies have a first printing statement so we are unable to determine such for this copy. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in blue cloth over boards, gilt lettering on front cover and spine, map endpapers, black-and-white photographic frontispiece of "The Six Who Came Back" with an additional eleven bound in throughout; octavo size (8 3/4" by 6"), pagination: [1-10] 11- 305.
