Prima edizione
First Edition. First printing. Octavo. Blue cloth hardcover, titled in gilt on spine and front cover; xix,518pp; illus. A tight, unmarked copy, Fine or very nearly so, lacking the presumed dustwrapper. The biographical portion was written by Admiral W.C. Braisted and Capt. W.H. Bell, and occupies the first 178pp. Rixey (1852-1928) was born in Culpeper, Virginia; rose to the rank of Surgeon General of the Navy from 1902-1910, and also served as the personal physician to Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt. He was the attending physician for McKinley over the nine days it took him to succumb to an assassin's bullet in 1901, an event covered in detail in both the autobiographical and biographical sections of the book. Also of interest are Rixey's recollections of Quentin Roosevelt, Teddy Roosevelt's youngest son, who died in combat in the First World War. An exceedingly nice copy of this somewhat uncommon biography, published by a small regional publisher and never widely distributed.
