Early settlers in Monroe and Conecuh Counties, Alabama, followed the Old Federal Road, a vital pathway through Creek Nation lands that becam…e a major route for westward migration after the Creek War (1813-14), bringing farmers seeking fertile cotton land, leading to frontier outposts like Burnt Corn (a trading post) and conflicts, ultimately opening up the region for significant settlement from the 1810s onward. Key Aspects of Early Settlement The Federal Road's Role: Originally a postal route, the Federal Road was crucial for military movements and, most importantly, for settlers and enslaved people moving into the Alabama Territory for land, especially after the Creek War. Land Rush & "Alabama Fever": The end of the Creek War made vast Native American lands available, fueling a rush of settlers drawn by rich soil for cotton farming, with the counties of Monroe (formed 1815) and Conecuh (formed 1818) directly benefiting. Frontier Life & Conflict: The road facilitated the establishment of frontier outposts and forts, but also led to conflicts, such as the Ogly Massacre and attacks on settlers, prompting the building of forts like Fort Dale for protection.
