Copia autografata
Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Inscribed by John Brazer in black ink in top margin of first page: "John [Forseth?] Esq., with the affectionate [compliments?] of the author." Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Text printed in black ink. 5 1/4" x 8 1/2." Thirty pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for occasional spots of foxing (most apparent on Pages 25-30) and chipping along spine. A Very Good copy. This is a sermon that was originally delivered on January 21, 1829 on the occasion of the ordination of Reverend Jonathan Cole. The sermon was given by John Brazer. In his sermon, Brazer defends the tenets of Unitarianism and Christianity in general. Brazer holds that the validity of Christianity ought not to be judged by the behavior of Christians. He insinuates that Christians are far from perfect but that Christian principles stand alone and independently from such sinful behavior. Brazer also discusses the concept of "zeal." He believes that Christianity is a religion of both mind and "sentiment." He warns, however, that zeal, passions, or strong emotions must be tempered by Christian faith and would be dangerous otherwise. Brazer further argues that zeal is not evidence of religious truth and laments an apparent widespread misconception that pronounced zeal is used in lieu of the "soundness of religious opinion." Brazer says that zeal must be of a Christian nature that is kind, humble, and charitable. While Brazer cautions against overzealousness and religious fanaticism, he warns against the other extreme of emotionless, austere religion. He says, "An abhorrence also of all fanaticism and extravagance, by a natural reaction, may have led to the opposite extreme of naked rationality and apparent indifference." Brazer contends that sermons with true and compelling messages may fall on deaf ears if they are overly rational in nature and do not reach the hearts of the listeners. He says it is important for ministers to capture the attention of their audience and that emotions play an important role in doing so. Brazer says, "Until the world becomes more intellectual than it now is, cold dead words, though instinct with oracular wisdom, will fall, like snow-flakes on frozen ground, upon cold, dead hearts." He later clarifies though that "deep emotion" associated with Christian faith does not call attention to itself. Brazer suggests that religion should strike a balance between logical austerity and emotional fervor and effect change in one's and other's hearts. Brazer briefly summarizes some of the principle beliefs of the Unitarian Church toward the end of his sermon such as what Unitarians believe the character of God to be. On Pages 29-30 is a brief historical note about the town of Kingston, Massachusetts, which began as the Jones River Parish in 1717, and the pastors who served in Kingston. Inscribed by Author(s).
