Brecher collected postcards as a child. He still has the cards his father sent home from business trips. There are also some from Oxford where he studied on a Rhodes Scholarship; from a melancholy sojourn in Paris; and from his trek in the Himalayas. Then there are the bizarre, humorous, or campy cards; the details of great paintings; the faces of actors and authors. Accompanying this sequence of visual images is a text filled with beguiling anecdotes and striking observations; the meeting with Samuel Beckett in a distinctly unliterary, tourist-thronged hotel in Paris; an account of Brecher's friendship with a tribal chief in the Amazon forest, and of his visits to various museums--from the Prado to Scotland Yard's grisly Black Museum.
