hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Missing. Farrar & Rinehart, Inc. [Published Date: 1942]. Hardcover, 280 pp. No other printings listed. In good condition / NO dust jacket. Green cloth covered boards have light bumping to edges and corner and a bit of nicking to the cloth at the corner tips and top and bottom of spine. Moderate overall scuffing, aging, spotting and soiling to covers as well. Pages lightly aged but otherwise unmarked. Not Ex-library. A good reading copy. Includes a color chart of the nine official Army camouflage colors and 132 photographs and diagrams. Aimed at a wider, non-military, readership, this is a comprehensive look at field camouflage as of the early 1940's (there is little or no information about naval camouflage). The subject of camouflage was of the utmost importance after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, which strengthened the general belief that airpower had become the decisive factor in industrial warfare. Breckenridge argues that camouflage ought to be treated as a legitimate science, based on empirical research and aimed at the systematic improvement of civil protection. The author was a major in the US Corps of Engineers and a descendant of John C. Breckenridge, Secretary of War for the Confederacy in the Civil War. Contents include: Foreword by U.S. Grant, 3D; Introduction; What is Camouflage?; What is the purpose of camouflage? Aerial Bombing; How does the Bombardier identify his target? Types of protective concealment; Site selection; The Development of a new site; Concealment of existing grounds and roads; Plant materials for protective concealment; Concealment of Existing Buildings; Other special and difficult problems; Decoy installations; Blackouts; Preparing the camouflage plan; The construction of models; Other aids to concealment; Looking ahead; appendix; bibliography; Index.
