Original dark green ribbed cloth lettered in gilt with a mounted color plate on the front cover. 22 x 15 cm. Very good plus in good plus dust jacket. The rear hinge is cracked but holding well. Some moderate foxing to pages facing plates and minor foxing to the margins of a few of the plates themselves, but in no place affecting the images. Still a bright and attractive copy. The scarce jacket has a dime-sized chip where the spine and front panels meet, a few smaller edge chips, several short, closed tears, and some minor soiling. FIRST EDITION. An attractively illustrated introduction to Mexico designed for the traveler or general reader. Many of the plates reproduce the photographs of Hugo Brehme (1882-1954), a German who emigrated to Mexico in 1908, who is "considered to be one of the founders of Mexican pictorialist photography" (Online Archive of California). His contributions to this book include the color frontispiece which is replicated on the front cover and the dust jacket.This was the second book by Elizabeth Vernon Quinn (1881-1962), preceded by her "Beautiful America" (1923). As with most of her books, she here adopts a male persona by omitting her first name. Quinn published many other books, mostly for children, including works on geography, gardening, and card games.

Pages are otherwise clean except for a few scattered fingerprints, a few small edge tears, scattered smudges and small stains along the foreedge and heel edge of the page block, small nicks along the gilded head edge, and modest age toning in the margins. Binding is square and secure, red leather spine showing the aforementioned sticker near the heel as well as mild scuffing along the joints, surface wear and a few little chips at the spine ends, a few spots of rubbing to the title bar and gilt decoration, the red leather corners bearing rub-through at the tips and surface wear around the edges with some scuffs on the front and rear surfaces; green textured paper over the rest of the hard cover showing only a pale spot near the bottom rear and chipping along the edges, mostly at the front foreedge and rear heel edge, otherwise sound and attractive.
