Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. Embark on a captivating journey through the South Pacific with this book, a detailed account of a cruise undertaken in 1865. The author, a keen explorer, was invited by Commodore Sir William Wiseman to join a voyage aboard the HMS Curacoa, a steam frigate sent to display the British flag throughout the Western Pacific. The book provides fascinating insights into the diverse cultures and landscapes encountered during this journey. The author vividly describes the people, customs, and natural wonders of Norfolk Island, Niue, the Samoan Islands, Tonga, Fiji, and the New Hebrides. He chronicles the encounters with missionaries, colonial officials, and indigenous populations, often contrasting their perspectives on civilization and progress. The author also sheds light on the challenges faced by native populations due to the arrival of European traders and settlers, highlighting the complexities of cultural exchange and the need for ethical engagement. The author's observations are particularly relevant within the broader context of 19th-century imperialism and the expanding influence of European powers in the Pacific. The book offers a nuanced understanding of the social and political dynamics at play, emphasizing the need for sensitivity and respect in navigating these complex relationships. The author's unique perspective, shaped by his travels and observations, provides valuable insights into the realities of colonial encounters in the South Pacific, offering a glimpse into a world that is both alluring and fraught with complexities. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

The Curacoa sailed from Sydney under the command of Sir William Wiseman "for the purpose of displaying the British flag in the different archipelagos of the Western Pacific" (preface); the ship called at Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island, Savage Island, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, the new Hebrides, Santa Cruz, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, and the Loyalty Islands. The voyage was most significant for the natural history researches it supported. The section on birds was written by George Riobert Gray and was limited to species either new or rare to science; it is illustrated by twentyone plates, all hand-coloured, after Smit. The other natural history plates comprise reptiles, fish, shells, insects, and butterflies. P2-5B. …
