Illustrated over-size soft cover/NF w/light wear & slight laminate bubbling to upper front corner. A detailed study of symbolic motifs of the High Cross in the Northern Ireland village in County Tyone, with pen-and-ink drawings (by author) and b/w photos. The High Cross is a free standing cross with a circle, fashioned from stone, and often richly ornamented. The larger and more magnificent crosses belonged to the richer monasteries, and so served as a symbol of divine and early power. The cross under study is some six metres in height. Earliest dating suggests the 10th century. Said to have been downed in the 17th and reconstructed in the 18th century. Differences in molding suggest what stands today may well be a composite of two different crosses. This work is particularly interesting for examining a later High Cross, virtually at its height in incorporating religious symbols.
