En quatre sections, l'Institut d'Egypte réunissait les plus brillants membres de la Commission des Sciences et des Arts, les cent cinquante-six savants que le général avait joints à l'expédition, une petite troupe inapte au combat mais aussi précieuse que les ânes, du moins si l'on en croit la légende de la bataille des pyramides ! Pour la plupart ingénieurs issus des Ponts-et-Chaussées ou de Polytechnique, ils relevèrent, étudièrent tout ce qui, de la Méditerranée à la Cataracte, sans oublier la mer Rouge et l'Arabie, pouvait l'être, amassant, jusqu'à la défaite de Canope, une somme immense de notes et documents, dont les soixante-deux séances de l'Institut d'Egypte, au fil de ces seulement trois années, donnent une idée vertigineuse.
