It was benzine.The carriage of benzine deve…loped into a substantial branch of the transport industry. However, some of the carriers, especially owners of small coastal steamships, would soon learn through trial and error that the additional business was a mixed blessing. Numerous coastal boats plying for trade had been built during the early days of motoring - or before - and were not designed to carry large quantities of a potent spirit such as benzine.

The topic covered is indeed an almost fogotten period when. before petroleum delivery was by merchant tankers. the "benzine' was carried in fragile four gallon tin cans, usualluy in pairs… in wooden cases. Carriage to NZ was by a wide variiety of ships, initially mainly sailing craft, later in steamships.As is to be expected transporting petrol, and kerosene, in boxed tins were damaged in handling, rough weather at sea. The result was that some ships, frequently unsuited to the trade, were destroyed by fire, often at sea. This is an aspect of NZ maritime history that was largely unrecorded until along came Brewer's "The Benzine Era. covering the years 1900 to 1926. This trade developed quickly as motor vehicles became more popular, but by the late 1920s tanker bulk delivery was increasing and within a few years the word "benzine" had given way to "petrol." Brewer's enlightening narritive is complemented by an outstanding collection of b/w photographs, of the trade and the ships involved. Transport historians and maritime buffs will appreciate this excellent book. This item a lightly used public library copy, library markings confined to coding label spine base and three preliminary pages. Reinforced spine strip, heavy clear plastic protective covers. Otherwise, the text section is VG+. Photos (illustratore).
