May include a first or last copied page. In 1848, the author, a lieutenant in the United States Army, was a member of an expedition which journeyed from San Francisco to Los Angeles by way of the Mojave and the Old Spanish Trail to Taos. Kit Carson was a member of the group and the account of that adventure comprises this article. Later, Brewerton would travel to Santa Fe, and then to Independence over the Santa Fe Trail, and write about those expeditions in two other accounts, also appearing first in Harper's and later in book form. See Wagner-Camp 222 and Graff 1788.
