Maroon cloth with still reflective gilt lettering on front cover, dulled gilt lettering ( OR original black) on dulled maroon spine; top edge once stained, but faded; fore-edge and lower edge rough-cut, with more than a few pages still uncut; only a few poorly opened with resultant chips to page edges; on second rear flyleaf, previous owner created a brief personal Index in fine point black ink and pencil, previous owner name in elegant cursive at top ffep ('L. Putnam'). Trifling wear at corners and at spine caps with small tears (glue repair: firm); '33' in white on lower spine, with a plain library pocket still affixed inside rear cover, else NO x-library stamps or identification: perhaps a part of previous owner's private library; two black ink spots at right mid-point of spine and adjacent gutter and a spot with smear (effect: pennant-shaped) on front cover middle left: more indicative of book's character than of damage: the book is over 90 years-old. This is the way to read an earlier Twentieth-Century book bringing its readers up-to date on the history of what we now call "Creation Science", despite the author's seeming dismay with the acceptance of same. He cites Henry Fairfield Osborn's From the Greeks to Darwin as a history of evolutionary theories and is offering his work here as a parallel history of "Non-Evolutionary" theories of "Creation". "The present-day controversy over Evolution brings to light a most curious situation. If one is interested in looking into both sides of the question, there is on the one side a vast array of school and college textbooks, encyclopedia articles, and special works that set forth the general content of the theory of evolution andits various special aspects. . . But curiously, on the side of Special Creation, there is virtually nothing to correspond to this ample and competent and up-to-date literature of Evolution." (p. 7) "Theology and philosophy are not Science. As a scientific theory that accounts for any known detail of any animal or plant, living or fossil, "the coming of age of the Origin of Species" in 1880 closed another chapter in the history of opinion. Thereafter, or all branches of natural science, the origin of anything now known by any sort of "creation" "in the beginning" has gone the way of Ptolemaic astronomy, the four-element chemistry, magic, and a flat earth. / Certain things are know to have evolved. ABout them, back of that, Science nowadays knows nothing." (p. 8).
