La "ideología de la intervención" ha sido compartida ampliamente por la izquierda, ciega ante el hecho de que los nuevos modos del imperialismo hoy se enmascaran bajo la defensa de los Derechos Humanos. Poniéndolo de manifiesto, Jean Bricmont establece el verdadero papel que cumple la ideología intervencionista en la expansión del imperialismo, y describe el papel que juega Estados Unidos, secundado por la OTAN y la Unión Europea, en un incremento de las acciones bélicas que pueden calificarse ya de guerra global. Jean Bricmont (Bélgica, 1952), es profesor de física teórica en la Universidad de Lovaina. Su actividad científica le ha merecido obtener diversos premios. Como ensayista, sus obras han sido traducidas a diversos idiomas, siendo la más conocida Imposturas intelectuales, escrita en colaboración con Alan Sokal. En 2003 publicó A la sombra de la Ilustración, un debate con el filósofo Régis Debray. TheIstitutomanagedtoprovideauniqueatmosphere foraninterdisciplinarymeeting,andtheseproceedingsre ectindeedthevery friendlybutneverthelessintenseandneverendingdiscussionsononeofthemost debatedissuesofscience:probability,andinparticularprobabilityinphysics. Wegratefullyacknowlegdetheorganisationalworkaswellastheeditorialwork donebyoursecretaryofthemeetingPhDstudentRoderichTumulka. Themeetingwasintendedtostimulaterenewedre ectiononthefundam- talandpracticalaspectsofprobabilityinphysics,inparticularthefoundations ofstatisticalsechanics,theprobabilityinthefoundationsofquantummech- ics,thealgebraicviewofprobabilityandthephilosophyofprobabilityinits interrelationwithphysics. Questionslikewhatprobabilityis,orwhatitisabout,orhowprobability entersphysicsareofasubtlekind. Theyaredi cultinvariousways,often mixedupwiththeenormouscomplexityandtheinescapablelackofmat- maticalrigorinthephysicalapplication,orwiththefoundationalproblemsof quantummechanics,wheretheprobabilisticignoranceconcerningthevaluesof certainphysicalquantitieshasevenbeenelevatedtoamatterofprinciple. At present,theunderstandingofprobabilityinphysicsisalmostaspersonalasthe understandingofquantumtheory. Theaimoftheconferencewasthustofocusonideasaboutprobabilityin physics,itsmeaninganditsphilosophicalimplications,byreviewingthedi erent facetsofprobabilityinphysicsinitsmodernsettingsandbytakingintoaccount modernquantumtheorieswithoutobservers,wheretheoriginofprobabilityis notmysti edbydogmatism. Thereviewsweregiveninone-hourtalks,andthediscussionswereheldin theformofroundtables,whereshortercontributionswerealsogiven. Thespeakerswereaskednottodilutethemainthemesoftheconference withtechnicalitiesandtofocussharplyontheissueofprobability. Thiswas VI Preface takentoheartbyallspeakersandthemeetingthusprovedverysuccessful. The contributionsinthisvolumeconsequentlyfocusonconceptualissues,andthey makeworthwhilereadingforspecialistsinthe eldoffoundationsaswellasfor nonspecialists,becauseextensivetechnicalpriorknowledgeisnotrequired. The contributionshavebeenleftintheordertheywerediscussedinthemeeting, whichprovedtobeaverynaturalone: 1. ClassicalStatisticalMechanics,whereBoltzmann sunderstandingofstat- ticalmechnanicsasarisingfromkineticgastheoryisreviewedandputinto modernperspectives,withanoutlookonrelativisticstatisticalmechanics. Therelativelackofemphasisonthee ectofchaoticbehaviouronthefo- dationsofprobabilityisnoteworthy. 2. QuantumMechanics,wherewereviewthoseontologicalquantumtheories, thathavebeenmostseriouslydiscussedintherecentyears. Amongthese areadeterministictheory(Bohmianmechanics)andboththeintrinsically randomtheoriesofwavepacketreductionandtheoperator-basedconsistent (decoherent)histories. Itstartswiththe orthodox view,againwith- phasisontheprobabilisticaspectsofthesetheories. 3. Chaoticsystems,wherethedynamicalaspectsforthefoundationsofpro- bilityinphysicsareadressed. 4. PhilosophyofProbability,wheretheissuesoftheearliersectionsarefurther scrutinizedonphilosophicalgrounds. Thesecontributionshavenoabstracts.
