Die Publikation steht im Kontext eines grosseren Forschungsvorhabens, das eine konzentrierte wissenschaftliche Beschaftigung mit jenem Teil der griechischen Historiographie zum Ziel hat, deren thematischer Fokus auf die historischen Welten des Alten Vorderasien gerichtet ist. Als Publikationsplattform dient die neu gegrundete Reihe "Classica et Orientalia". Nach einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk des Ktesias (CLeO 1) und dem Hof der Achameniden (CLeO 2) ist dies die dritte Publikation des Forschungsschwerpunktes.
