Conditie : Nieuw. - Kritische bewerking van een manuscript door geschreven door Cornelis Brinkman (1886-1969) en Jan Lienos (1907-1971), beiden houtscheepmakers aan de Rijkswerf Willemsoord (Den Helder). Zij stelden het manuscript omstreeks 1960 samen om de kennis van de traditionele houten scheepsbouw voor het nageslacht te bewaren. Het manuscript is bewerkt en drukklaar gemaakt door J.P. Puype, bibliothecaris van het Rijksmuseum 'Nederlandsch Scheepvaart Museum' te Amsterdam. Het is geen theoretisch scheepsbouwboek zonder meer. Het is een van de zeldzame voorbeelden van een stap-voor-stap beschrijving van de bouw van een houten schip en van alle verschillende onderdelen: romp, dekken, dekhuizen en andere constructies, en van het maken van een houten helling. Hoewel geen leerboek, worden er toch een aantal basisvaardigheden beschreven, zoals het afschrijven, het buigen van hout en het breeuwen. Daarbij worden de gereedschappen opgesomd en hun gebruik behandeld. Er zijn ruim 100 duidelijke instructieve tekeningen en schetsen, plus nog ruim 100 diagrammen en detail-afbeeldingen. Alleen al hierom verdient dit boek een voorname plaats in de schaarse literatuur over het houtscheepbouw. Vele tekeningen zijn ruimtelijk en in perspectief opgezet. Daardoor geeft het een duidelijk inzicht in de soms gecompliceerde scheepsconstructies. Alhoewel de beschrijving uitgaat van de situatie op de Rijkswerf en de bouw derhalve op kleine zeeschepen, sloepen, patrouillevaartuigen e.d. betrekking heeft, is daarvan nauwelijks iets te merken. Dat komt door het fundamentele karakter en de universele opzet van de inhoud. Van kiel tot dekhuis wordt alles systematisch in een voor iedereen duidelijke taal uiteengezet. Zowel de kenner als de liefhebber, zowel de amateur scheepsbouwer als de restaurateur, de modelbouwer, de scheepshistoricus en elke geïnteresseerde leek zal in dit boek aan zijn trekken kunnen komen.
