IT is intended to give here a brief guide to the Life only, but with some hitherto unpublished matter included. Of previous biographies, the .Naval Chronicle and Clarke and McArthur, together with Nicolas's seven volumes of Nelson's Despatches and Letters (packed with much other material in addition) embrace most of the material about Nelson's life, and his letters more reveal the man to us than anything else written about him. To date there have been published some seventy or eighty " Lives " or work about the life only, besides hundreds of " Studies," so that it would seem that another " Life of Nelson " is scarcely called for. But a little " Guide " is required by those whose interest in Nelson is, perhaps, awakened by a visit to the Victory. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Mr. H. Woodbine, lately an invaluable public servant, of the Reference Library, Birmingham, and Mr. W. H. Pilling, of Burnley, Lancs., who have so kindly corrected the work and made suggestions. September, 1946." Size: 8vo.
