Diese Fremddefinition führt Ernst H. Gombrich auf die Verschiebung sozialer Hierarchien im Übergang von der Feudalherrschaft zum Kapitalismus zurück. Weil Juden der Landbesitz versagt war, nahmen sie als erste die sozialen Schlüsselpositionen in Handel und Finanzwesen ein. Erst dadurch wurden sie - vor ihrer Herkunft und ihrer Nationalität - als Juden wahrgenommen. So gelingt es Ernst H.
