Aggiungi al carrelloCouverture rigide. Condizione: Satisfaisant. Edition originale. REFERENCES : Osler WD : Thesis on rickets, p. 5 : "the microscopical changes in rickety bone were first described by Broca (Soc. Anat. de Paris, 1852), he also showing that rickets, as regards its bone pathology, is due to a deviation, an arrest, a suspension of normal bone-formation." ; Shapiro F : Pediatric Orthopedic Deformities, pp. 6, 13, 171, 523, 524, 526, 535, 536 : "Broca defined these regions [bones] structurally on the basis of both gross inspection and the early use of histologic sections which enabled him to study the phenomenon down to the cellular level. He was able to observe five layers at the physical and periphyseal regions. Broca had further described the structure of the growth region, demonstrating that between the cartilage of the epiphysis and the spongy tissue of the diaphysis there were two layers of variable thickness: one of which was no longer plain cartilage and the other not yet fully spongy tissue. The layers were referred to as the chondroid and spongioid, respectively." ; Schiller F : Paul Broca, Founder of French Anthropology, Explorer of the Brain, p. 92 : "Aside from cancer, his first presentations showed his interest in musculoskeletal disorders: rickets, osteoarthritis, and muscular dystrophy. They all benefited from micro-pathological investigations. The rest of his 78 pages shows that he was the first to point out the essential change in the tissues, findings generally credited to Virchows, whose 99 pages on the subject appeared in the following year.".

REFERENCES : Ann La Berge, Medical microscopy in Paris, 1830-1855 (In : Clio Medica, 1994): "Broca, best known for his studies of the speech centres of the brain ans as the founder of anthropology in France, was the leading disciple of Lebert and also taught microscopy informally. Broca received his MD from the Paris Faculty in 1849. That same year the Academy of Medicine opened a competition for the best essay in cancer, and Broca submitted av 350-page manuscript which won the Prix Portal. Schiller describes the prize-winning essay as a well organized account of Lebert's principal teachings. The essay also contained Broca's own work in pathology, microscopy, and his discovery of how malignant neoplasms spread through the veins. Broca followed Lebert's basic philosophy, stressing the importance of a clinical approach combined with microscopy."; Schiller F: Paul Broca, p. 67 : "Broca discovered the venous spread of cancer."; Wolff, The science of cancerous disease, pp. 98, 102, 135; Monod-Broca Ph : Paul Broca : Un géant du XIXe siècle, pp. 56-67: "Ce mémoire fondateur fait date dans l'histoire de la connaissance des cancers.

REFERENCES : Schiller F: Paul Broca, pp. 106-108: "Aneurysms and their Treatment was one of the last books in the classical manner as well as one of the first modern monographs on a relatively limited subject. (Its thorough index is still something rather unusual in French texts.) It not only developed an understanding of current ideas out of the succession of past lines of thought, but also marks the threshold for vascular surgery, which came into being in the second half of the nineteenth century.""; Wangensteen &Wangensteen, The rise of surgery, p. 231 : "a knowledgeable monograph of over 900 pages" ; Heirs of Hippocrates, 1912 : "This comprehensive treatise still remains one of the most exhaustive and accurate accounts of this medically important and dangerous condition."; Monod-Broca Ph : Paul Broca, pp. 70-76; Göran Sundén (1967) Some Aspects of Longitudinal Bone Growth: An Study of the Rabbit Tibia, Acta Orthopaedica Scandinavica, 38:sup103, 1-134: "More than a century ago, Broca (1856) noted an accelerated growth of both femur and tibia in a child with an arterio-venous aneurysm situated immediately distal to the inguinal ligament."; Willius FA & Dry TJ: A History of the Heart and the Circulation, p. 149, 150, 374 : "Paul Broca was the first to recognized the potential dangers of arteriovenous fistula and to approach the condition from the surgical standpoint."; Hamilton D: A history of organ transplantation, p. 71: "Broca described an arteriovenous fistula of the elbow, caused by bloodletting, similar to the fistulas deliberately created in the 1960s for hemodyalysis patients."; Benndorf G: Dural Cavernous Sinus Fistulas, p.4. Karten). Piere Paul Broca (1824-1880) most often remebered for his contributions to neurology, Broca was among the greatest of the French anthropologists. He originated modern craniometry and in that conection devised amny craniometric and cranioscopic instruments. He invented at lest twenty-seven instruments for the more accrate study of craniology, and he helped to standardize methods. He was mainly responsible for the formation of the Société d'Anthropologie de Paris in 1859, of the Revue d'anthropologie in 1872 and of the École d'Anthropologie in 1876. At this time anthropology was considered by both church and goverment to be sinister and subversive, but Broca surmounted all oposition and eventually established it securely. -cf.
