In addition, police officers sometimes commit criminal offences while undercover-or they fake criminal behavior during the course of the sting-and the pretend `interrogations` are not bounded by normal interview standards. In order to evaluate the legitimacy of this police practice, Keenan and Brockman survey over 80 cases of the use of the Mr. Big ruse by police in Canada - and find that this procedure is not as successful as it appears. The authors argue that the Mr. Big procedure encourages a police culture of violence and convictions rather than justice and suggest that this practice must be drastically curtailed if we are to have a legal system that is focused on the pursuit of justice.

George Julius Brockman (1850-1912) was an explorer and pastoralist… in the Gascoyne and Kimberley regions of Western Australia. For thirty or more years until his death, Julius Brockman recorded in his diary almost daily. Brockman spent his early adult years working in Busselton as a cattle hunter and foreman for H R Princep. By 1875, he had moved north to the Gascoyne, managing pastoral stations, including Pyramid Station. Brockman was the first European settler to bring stock to the west Kimberley to secure land on the Fitzroy River. He was blocked by new government land acquisition regulations from buying land on the south side of the river, and so he moved north to establish the Meda station on the May River. In 1888, Brockman sold Meda to return to the Gascoyne and purchased the Minilya station. (J S Battye Library of West Australian History).
