Thresher, Publisher, Minneapolis 1890 An important, early photographic survey and history of the city of Minneapolis from a prolific photographer and photograph collector. In the preface Bromley describes the books originality due to the fact that the plates are, with one exception, composed entirely of "sun pictures", an early term for photographs. Oblong 4to, ff. [182]*, quarter sheep, gilt stamped, maroon, pebbled cloth, marbled endpapers, housed in a custom clamshell, Near fine with repairs, light rubbing and loss to leather at fore-edge corners, small scratch to front board, a few minor chips and tears to page edges, rebacked with original spine preserved in clamshell pocket, hinges reinforced, the first 16 leaves are numbered in pencil at lower right before the effort was abandoned. "Edward A. Bromley (1848-1925) worked as a news reporter and photographer for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, where he gained interest in chronicling history, particularly American Indian history. He transferred to the Minneapolis edition of the Pioneer Press in 1877 and began working for the Minneapolis Journal in 1894. After a failed attempt to collect coins, Bromley embarked on a life-long project to collect photographs and negatives of the pioneer days in Minnesota. His first purchase of negatives was from Benjamin F. Upton of St. Anthony, from whom he purchased over 500 negatives in 1878 when Upton relocated to Florida. He also purchased 1600 negatives from William H. Illingworth's gallery in St. Paul. During his first ten years of collecting, Bromley purchased the negatives and plates of 30 other photographers (including Pepper, Jacoby, Rugg, and Harvey) totaling about 7000 negatives. It was built on the square bounded by Fourth and Fifth, and Wabasha and Cedar Streets.A manuscript annotation below the printed caption reads "Torn down to give place to the new Court House".Dane Smith's 1993 article "A Short and Happy History of Ramsey County and Its Two Earlier Courthouses" notes that the land for the courthouse was donated by Vetal Guerin, one of St. Paul's earliest settlers. At the time the courthouse was built it was perhaps the first permanent administrative structure in Minnesota. Wilder came to Saint Paul in 1857 from Lewis, New York and joined his cousins James and Henry… Burbank in their operation of mail and package stage lines, storage and wholesale groceries. Over time Wilder became involved in railroads, lumber, banking, insurance, real estate and merchandising businesses. He would become one of Saint Paul's most prominent and wealthy citizens, living in a castle-like mansion on Summit Avenue across from the Saint Paul Cathedral.
