Her novels tended to have peasants as heroes but with equally sympathetic landlords. Stephen Gwynn thought that she despised the current day but became a rebel when writing of the past. Her most famous novel is Hurrish (1886), set in the Burren country of County Clare; she also wrote a critical study of Maria Edgeworth in 1905. She never married, and is thought today to have been Gay. This is a Very Good copy of the Second Edition, part of the "Story of the Nations" series, and rather uncommon.
