Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Are women past caring? Care is essential to social relationships and individual well-being. It is woven into New Zealands key social institutions, such as the family, and is also embedded in societal expectations around state provision of health and welfare. Care is so vital, in fact, that…it is often taken for granted and goes unnoticed and unrewarded. Historical and philosophical enquiry have largely ignored the issue of care, yet it raises profound questions about gender, justice and morality. The essays in this volume raise those questions directly at the level of abstraction where prominent New Zealand women philosophers grappled with the political implications, and on the ground at the level of family relationships. Understanding the history of care requires attention to personal narratives, such as a Ma ori grandmothers story, a Rarotongan leaders concept of duty to her people, or the sense of service that drove a long-term social worker. Memories of childhood night-time care are carried across the ocean from North East India. The depiction of sole-carer mothers in New Zealand film suggests a caring alternative to the celebrated concept of man alone. The case studies examined focus on the everyday nature of care operating across domestic, institutional and political spaces, and build upon areas of strength in womens history with its interest in family, motherhood, health, welfare, education and employment. The foundations of Past Caring? lie with Making Women Visible, a national conference on womens history held at the University of Otago in February 2016. This important volume opens up a set of perspectives and experiences of caring to begin a conversation about urgent questions facing New Zealand society. How do we recognise, reward and do justice to those acts that hold our society together? Are women past caring? Care is essential to social relationships and individual well-being. It is woven into New Zealand's key social institutions, such as the family, and is also embedded in societal expectations around state provision of health and welfare. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. In 1893 New Zealand became the first country in the world with universal suffrage: all New Zealand women now had the right to vote. This achievement owed much to an extraordinary document: the 1893 Women's Suffrage Petition. Over 270 metres long, with the signatures of some 24,000 women (an…d at least twenty men), the Suffrage Petition represented the culmination of many years of campaigning by suffragists, led by Kate Sheppard, and women throughout the country. The women who signed the petition came from many walks of life. The names of university graduates appear on the petition sheets, together with some who could mark their names only with a cross. Teachers, domestic servants, shopkeepers and nurses signed; public benefactors appear, and a few women with criminal convictions. Maori women shared many of the suffragists' concerns for social justice and temperance as well as political representation, and their signatures appear on the Suffrage Petition. Other women who signed had immigrated - many from Britain, some from Europe or Asia. The story of the Women's Suffrage Petition is told here through the lives of over 150 women who signed; alongside is the narrative of the campaign for women's suffrage. The first page of the campaign for women's suffrage. The first page of the petition is included, with twenty-one sheets representing different parts of the country. Reissued in January 2023 in a new hardcover format. In 1893 New Zealand became the first country in the world with universal suffrage: all New Zealand women now had the right to vote. This achievement owed much to an extraordinary document: the 1893 Women's Suffrage Petition. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 434 pages. In 1893 the women of southern Dunedin supported the campaign for female suffr age far more vigorously than women in any other city in the country. Change was in the air. In southern Dunedin as in most of the Western world, transformations in femininity and masculinity both shaped and…were shaped by the era of moderni ty. This book, the product of five years' work by an interdisciplinary group of scholars, examines gender in a particular 'place': the suburbs of southern Duned in, which were in many respects typical of Western societies, but also relativel y predisposed towards gender change. The authors address gender through a series of 'sites': work, education, consumption, leisure, poverty, mobility and transp ort, health, and religion. Through this decisive fifty-year period, as young wom en increasingly worked for pay before marriage and went on to have fewer babies than their mothers, and as many men began turning their backs on the pub to spen d more time with their families, such apparently unobtrusive changes in gender r elations reshaped the experience of urban life and played a major part in making it modern. This book demonstrates how 'setting gender deep' in the context of a particular place - in this case New Zealand's earliest industrial suburbs - can illuminate the complex character of a key issue in debates about culture and so ciety.

Soft cover. Condizione: As New. 1st Edition. A very clean copy which feels unread. This comprehensive analysis of gender in the working-class New Zealand suburbs of Dunedin illustrates the ideological changes that became manifest in the period from 1893, when New Zealand became the first country to grant suffrage to women, to 19…40. Quantitative and qualitative data on work, education, consumption, leisure, poverty, mobility, transportation, health, religion, and marriage in this community offer insight into the changing gender roles during this time. This major contribution to gender studies research considers the impact of sociology, urban planning, and geography in societal change.
