Cloth, 8vo, 26 cm, 109 pp, numerous ills. From the introduction: "There are few firms of craft bookbinders that can claim an existence of longer than one hundred years. One which can is Zaehnsdorf Limited, founded in 1842 by Joseph Zaehnsdorf. It remained under the direct control of three successive generations of the Zaehnsdorf… family for a period exceeding its century; at first under the style of Joseph Zaehnsdorf, and then, as Zaehnsdorf Limited, following its registration as a private limited company in 1913. The company passed from the control of the family in 1947, and, after several changes of name and ownership, it began trading again as Zaehnsdorf Limited, under its present owners, in May 1957. The era when under control of the family presents a convenient and interesting period for study, and together with the three principals concerned, will be considered in the present essay. On the basis of the available records, and articles in contemporary trade periodicals, a few perspectives are here presented on the story of one of the better known firms of English bookbinders." Fine.

Limited edition of 1250 copies, of which 250 are for sale. Cloth, 8vo, 28 cm, xvi, 256 pp ills, ports, facs From the foreword: "Orlando Jewitt was a self-taught engraver, and his early published work (which was said to date from when he was less than sixteen years of age) showed his inexperience. It was really only with the appe…arance of Matthew Bloxam's Principles of Gothic Architecture (1829) that Jewitt's talents were seen to be flowering. The woodcuts he created for Bloxam's book were outstanding both for delicacy of drawing and for fine cutting. It was these qualities, together with a genuine and well-informed feeling for architecture, that were to advance Jewitt toward the head of his profession. Outstanding among his work of this period were the charming illustrations he produced for James Ingram's celebrated Memorials of Oxford (1832 - 37); it is doubtful whether the character of Oxford has ever been better portrayed than in these diminutive views of its buildings. And as the Gothic Revival moved into its more popular phase Jewitt's work came into greater prominence. In 1841 he was invited to collaborate with Pugin in his historic True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture. It has been well said that in due course "he had almost a monopoly of the special class of wood engraving in which he excelled". At its best Jewitt's work is outstanding. But he has been unfortunate in his reputation. With the close of the Edwardian age, and with the development of modern processes of illustration, Jewitt's name passed virtually into oblivion. When the late Harry Carter drew attention to his work in a small monograph in1962 he had to concede that Jewitt was then hardly remembered. Unfortunately, the resources on which Carter was able to draw for information were limited, and it is only from a comprehensive survey of his work that the true nature of Jewitt's achievement can be assessed. Now, for the first time, with the full evidence provided by Frank Broomhead such a survey becomes practicable." Fine.
