Augustus Thebaud (20 November 1807 â" 17 December 1885) was a French-American Jesuit educator and publicist. Thebaud was born at Nantes, France. He studied at first in the preparatory seminary at Nantes, then entered the grand seminaire and was ordained to the secular priesthood at the usual age. After three years of parochial work in his native city, he entered the Society of Jesus in Italy, on 27 November 1835, whence he returned to France in 1837 to pursue a course of scientific studies at the Sorbonne under Ampere and others. He landed in the United States on 18 December 1838, and was called to the chair of chemistry at St. Mary s College, Kentucky, where he became rector in 1846. Before the end of that year however the Jesuits left Kentucky to take charge of St. John s College, Fordham, New York, which had been transferred to them from the Diocese of New York by Bishop Hughes. Father Thebaud was the first Jesuit President of St. John's, a position which he held from 1846 to 1851 and again from 1860 to 1863. In the interval he taught the sciences for two years, 1851â"52, under Father Larkin, and the following eight years he spent as the pastor of St. Joseph's Church, Troy. To this charge he returned after his second rectorship at Fordham and filled the position from 1863â"69, and again from 1873-74. The intervening years we find him at first in Montreal and then at St. Joseph s Church, Hudson City, New Jersey. After spending another year at Fordham, he was assigned to St. Francis Xavier s parish, New York, where he passed the rest of his days. He died at St. John's College in 1885, and was buried in the University Cemetery. -- Wikipedia. . . . . . . . . . The illustrtor is Robert S. Bross (American, c. 1831 - active 1856/1881) He was known for his wood engravings.

Prima edizione
Illustrated Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition, First Printing. A delicate and bright example of late-Victorian moral literature, featuring high-quality wood-block engravings by the noted firm of Bross & Bogart. KEY FEATURES +++ Visuals: Color-printed cover lithograph; numerous wood-block engraved plates and a title vignette by the Bross-Bogart studio. +++ Binding: Original paper-covered boards; front cover features a vibrant mounted chromolithograph. +++ Content: A series of moral vignettes and instructional stories typical of the 'Conduct of Life' genre for children. +++ Associated Names: Robert Bross and John Bogart (Engravers); S.W. Partridge (London Co-Publisher). +++ Rarity: Uncommon; WorldCat and institutional records suggest fewer than 15 copies held worldwide. CONDITION: Very Good -- Bindings are tight and square. Text is clean with light, even toning consistent with 19th-century paper stock. Moderate shelf wear to the edges of the boards; the front cover illustration remains exceptionally bright and well-preserved. +++ Imprint: Thomas Nelson and Sons / S.W. Partridge and Sons. First Edition. +++ Specs: 5.75 inches tall / [56] unnumbered pages. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Thomas Nelson and Sons were pioneers in the 'reward book' and 'gift book' market, utilizing high-quality illustrations to make moral and religious instruction more palatable to children. 'My Pretty Present' is a prime example of the transition from strictly religious tracts to the more aesthetic 'gift' book style of the 1880s. The inclusion of engravings by Bross-Bogart is significant. Robert Bross was a prominent New York engraver whose studio provided the high-level technical detail required for the 'fine-line' wood engraving style that dominated the American market before the widespread adoption of halftone processes. The dual imprint suggests a coordinated transatlantic release, a hallmark of Nelson's expansive 19th-century distribution network. SUBJECTS: Conduct of Life, Victorian Education, Children's Moral Stories, Wood Engraving, 19th Century Lithography, Thomas Nelson & Sons, Juvenile Literature, Victorian Gift Book, Conduct of Life.
