Arens (Sprachwissenschaft 111 ff. - Einzelband der ersten Ausgabe dieser Physiologie der Sprache" von dem als Geographen und Historiker sowie als Verfasser der "Briefe aus Italien" bekannten Char…les de Brosses (1709-1777). De Brosses' Schrift hat "wenigstens das Verdienst., an der rein menschlichen Entstehung der Sprache festzuhalten. Dabei ist anzuerkennen, daß es Willkür und Uebereinkommen von der ursprünglichen Entstehung der Sprache ausschließt" (Benfey). Sprache entsteht nach ihm durch die "Nachahmung der äußeren Dinge, sowohl durch Laute als auch durch geschrieben Zeichen". Er setzt eine gemeinsame Ursprache voraus, die er durch Zurückführung aller Wörter auf ihre absoluten oder wenigstens einfachen Wurzeln erschließen will. Die Beispiele seiner Etymologie muten uns heute abenteuerlich an, waren in der Zeit aber wegen der allgemeinen mangelnden Sachkenntnis nicht befremdend. De Brosses "teilt die Gesamtheit der Sprachen ein in solche für das Ohr und solche für das Auge! Aber nicht als Kuriosum kommt hier der Präsident de Brosses zu Wort, ., sondern als extreme Verkörperung der rational-mechanistischen Tendenz seiner Zeit und als ein Denkmal der Sprachbetrachtung 50 Jahre von dem Anbruch der vergleichenden Sprachwissenschaft" (Arens).
