Edgewear at upper spine including 1/4" tear. "It is just over 50 years since the last exhibition of works by Ford Madox Brown, and almost 100 years sin…ce he held his first (and only) one-man show in London in 1865. The time is due for a reassessment of his paintings. In one sense, true works of art are always topical. Madox Brown's painting has an aspect which is especially so - he raises the issue of Social Realism. For instance, Work is a painting specifically intended to serve a social purpose: whereas Chaucer is an example of an ivory tower approach. The conflict between these two views is still with us, as the recent exhibition here of Soviet Russian art reminded us. There was a special link too between Madox brown and Liverpool: the award of the Liverpool Academy of Arts' prize to his Jesus Washing Peter's Feet in 1856 and again to Chaucer in 1858 at a time of controversy over the Pre-Raphaelite school, came as welcome encouragement; the Liverpool artists of the time became his friends and were not a little influenced by his work. … We hope that the [exhibition] is a truly representative assemblage of Madox Brown's work." - preface by Ben Shaw.
